NBEMS Launches Online Programme on Artificial Intelligence in Medical Education

New Delhi: The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) has recently introduced an Online Programme focused on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Medical Education. This initiative invites applications from postgraduate doctors, faculty members, trainees, and alumni. Dr. Abhijat Sheth, President of NBEMS and Chairperson of the National Medical Commission (NMC), provided insights regarding the course.

The Importance of AI in Medical Practice

In his statement, Dr. Sheth emphasized that the course is designed to enhance the understanding of AI among medical professionals. He noted that the integration of digital tools and advanced technologies is transforming medical practice. AI is increasingly utilized to assist doctors with diagnosis, treatment planning, predictive analytics, and patient monitoring. When employed effectively, AI has the potential to boost efficiency, decrease medical errors, and improve the quality of patient care.

Course Objectives and Structure

Dr. Sheth highlighted the necessity for doctors to grasp the capabilities and limitations of AI. The course aims to provide a foundational and practical understanding of AI and its application in healthcare. It will simplify AI concepts and feature real-life clinical examples. Additionally, the curriculum will address critical topics such as ethics, data privacy, patient safety, and the importance of human oversight in clinical decision-making.

The course has been developed in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Lucknow, along with input from distinguished faculty members who are pioneers in AI within medical education. Senior national and international educators will contribute to the programme by delivering various lectures and classes.

Participating Faculty and Accessibility

Dr. Sheth further mentioned that esteemed faculty from institutions such as Oxford University, Harvard University, and Mayo Clinic have agreed to participate in this course. While primarily targeted at NBEMS trainees and faculty, other medical professionals are also welcome to enroll. Notably, Dr. Sheth stated that there will be no fees charged to participants for this course.
