Myth vs. Truth: The Impact of Carbohydrates on Baby’s Birth Weight

Understanding Carbohydrates as a Macronutrient

Carbohydrates, along with proteins and fats, are classified as macronutrients essential for sustaining metabolism and energy levels. These nutrients include sugars, starches, and fibers found in various foods such as vegetables, fruits, dairy, and grains.

Research Findings on Carbohydrate Intake During Pregnancy

A study published in the British Journal of Nutrition explored the relationship between macronutrient consumption during pregnancy and birth weight. The researchers discovered that for every additional 10 grams of carbohydrates consumed daily, there was an associated increase of approximately 4 grams in the baby’s birth weight. This evidence indicates that higher carbohydrate intake during pregnancy correlates with increased birth weight.
