Understanding Breathlessness

What is Breathlessness?

Breathlessness is an uncomfortable and often frightening sensation. For individuals with chronic illnesses that cause shortness of breath during minimal activity, it can be particularly challenging. The following diagrams illustrate effective techniques to regain your breath without expending excessive energy. It is important to note that experiencing breathlessness can be energy-intensive, and subsequent episodes may leave you feeling fatigued.

When to Seek Medical Advice

Feeling breathless after engaging in strenuous activities can be typical. However, if you find yourself becoming breathless during tasks that were previously easy, it is advisable to consult your doctor. Early diagnosis can lead to quicker resolution of the underlying issues contributing to breathlessness.

Programs to Manage Breathlessness

Heart 2 Heart Initiatives

At Heart 2 Heart, we offer programs designed to help manage breathlessness and enhance exercise capacity. Before beginning a program, participants will undergo an exercise test. This assessment serves two key purposes: to tailor your exercise routine to the appropriate level and to identify any underlying causes of breathlessness that can be addressed by a physiotherapist. Interventions may include clearing sputum from the chest and targeted exercise training.
