CABG – Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting

What is a CABG?

CABG, short for Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting, is a surgical procedure designed to enhance blood flow to the heart muscle. This condition arises from the narrowing of the coronary arteries, which supply blood to the heart. To address the blockage, a surgeon uses a vein from the leg, an artery from the arm, or the mammary artery.

When utilizing a vein or artery from the leg or arm, one end is connected to the aorta, a major vessel leading from the heart, while the other end is attached to the coronary artery beyond the blockage. In cases where the mammary artery is used, it is already connected to the aorta; only one end is detached and then reattached below the blockage. Although there may not be a visible scar when using the mammary artery, patients often underestimate the discomfort associated with its release. It is important to note that a line from the breastbone to the left breast can result in significant pain post-surgery.

Why Can’t I Just Have a Stent?

In some instances, the narrowing in the artery may be too extensive for a stent to effectively cover. In such cases, CABG becomes the only viable option. Additionally, if the blockage occurs at a bend in the artery, stenting may not be suitable. For patients with diabetes, bypass surgery is often the preferred choice.

How Long Does It Take to Recover from a CABG?

Recovery from CABG surgery typically takes six weeks for the breastbone to heal and an additional six weeks for it to fully consolidate. However, as this is a major surgical procedure, it may take up to two years to experience the full benefits of the surgery. Patients can expect to feel gradual improvement, with a return to normal activities possible within six months.

Prior to discharge from the hospital, patients will receive guidance on an exercise program and wound care. They will also be referred to a cardiac rehabilitation program to support both their physical and emotional recovery, as well as to assist in managing heart disease.
