Cardiomyopathy

What is Cardiomyopathy?

Cardiomyopathy refers to a disorder of the heart muscle. This condition encompasses various types, each with distinct characteristics. Below, we explore three major types of cardiomyopathy.

Dilated Cardiomyopathy

Dilated cardiomyopathy is characterized by an enlarged heart. In this condition, the heart muscle becomes weak and less efficient at pumping blood throughout the body. This inefficiency can lead to fluid accumulation in the lungs, resulting in breathlessness. Several factors may contribute to this condition, including heart attacks, high blood pressure, and excessive alcohol consumption. In some cases, no specific cause can be identified, which is referred to as idiopathic cardiomyopathy.

Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is diagnosed when the heart muscle thickens without an identifiable reason. This thickening differs from that caused by high blood pressure or athletic training. While excessive physical exertion is discouraged for individuals with this condition, moderate exercise can offer benefits.

Restrictive Cardiomyopathy

Restrictive cardiomyopathy involves the stiffening of the heart muscle, preventing it from fully relaxing. As a result, the heart struggles to fill with blood effectively, hindering its ability to pump blood throughout the body.

Energy Considerations

Individuals with cardiomyopathy may experience muscle wasting in the arms and legs, contributing to feelings of fatigue. To combat this, both aerobic activities (such as walking, swimming, and cycling) and strength training can be beneficial in reducing tiredness.
