Heart Attack

What is a Heart Attack?

A heart attack occurs when the blood supply to the heart muscle is obstructed, preventing it from receiving the necessary oxygen. This blood supply is delivered through the coronary arteries. When the flow of blood is blocked, it is crucial to restore it quickly to prevent damage to the heart muscle.

Symptoms of a heart attack may include:
– Chest pain or discomfort
– Shortness of breath
– Upper body discomfort
– Cold sweat
– Nausea
– Back pain

If you experience these symptoms, it is vital to call emergency services immediately at 999 or 112 for prompt medical attention and restoration of blood flow.

Causes of a Heart Attack

The blockage in the arteries is often due to a build-up of plaque. Over time, a piece of this plaque may break off, leading to the formation of a clot. When the clot grows large enough, it can partially or completely obstruct the artery.

Treatment Options

Treatment for a heart attack may involve the administration of clot-busting medications or a procedure in the catheterization laboratory to place a stent in the affected artery. Additionally, patients will be prescribed various medications and receive guidance on exercise, diet, and lifestyle modifications.

Post-Hospital Care After a Heart Attack

Medication and Dietary Compliance

Upon discharge from the hospital, it is essential to adhere to the prescribed medication and dietary guidelines you received during your stay.

Gradual Physical Activity

You should gradually increase your physical activity, starting from 10 minutes of walking per day and aiming to reach 30 minutes daily within six weeks.

Emotional Recovery

It is common for individuals to experience a grieving process after a heart attack, which may include feelings of anger or despondency. This emotional aspect can be one of the most challenging parts of recovery.

Cardiac Rehabilitation Program

Two to six weeks after your heart attack, you may join a cardiac rehabilitation program that includes medication for risk factors and exercise training.
