Understanding Obesity in Ireland
The Prevalence of Obesity
Obesity has emerged as a significant health concern in Ireland. Currently, nearly two-thirds of the Irish population is classified as overweight or obese. According to the Growing Up in Ireland study conducted in 2011, 20% of nine-year-olds were identified as overweight, with 7% of this group falling into the obese category.
Health Risks Associated with Obesity
The health implications of obesity are severe and include an increased risk of heart disease, certain types of cancer, diabetes, and various mental health issues. The financial burden of obesity on the healthcare system is staggering, costing over one billion euros annually.
Government Initiatives to Combat Obesity
To address this pressing issue, the government has launched an obesity policy aimed at helping individuals achieve a healthy weight through improved dietary habits and regular physical activity. The introduction of calorie posting legislation is one of the measures designed to promote better food choices. Additionally, a sugar-sweetened drink levy is proposed as part of the 2017 budget to further encourage healthier consumption patterns.
Assessing Your Weight
How to Determine if You are Overweight or Obese
To assess whether you are overweight or obese, you will need to measure your weight in kilograms and your height in meters. With these figures, you can calculate your Body Mass Index (BMI) using the formula:
Weight / (Height x Height)
For example, a woman weighing 70 kg and measuring 1.68 meters tall has a BMI of 24 kg/m². A BMI above 25 kg/m² indicates that you are overweight, while a BMI over 30 kg/m² classifies you as obese.
Steps to Achieve a Healthy Weight
To lose weight, it is essential to decrease your caloric intake and increase your physical activity levels.
