What is a Cardiac Physiotherapist?

Role and Expertise

A cardiac physiotherapist is a specialized physiotherapist who provides care for clients after experiencing cardiac events such as angina, heart attacks, heart failure, or pacemaker insertions. Their expertise is crucial in assessing cardiac patients, particularly since many may also present with non-cardiac issues, including arthritis, back pain, joint replacements, strokes, and respiratory conditions.

Preventive Care and Exercise Prescription

In the realm of prevention, cardiac physiotherapists are well-equipped to conduct exercise tests and prescribe tailored exercise regimes aimed at managing blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and weight. This approach allows them to enhance patient performance by evaluating exercise capacity and mobility. Exercise programs can be customized to accommodate individual mobility limitations.

Health Challenges Among Cardiac Patients

Approximately half of patients with heart disease face additional health concerns. Statistics indicate that around 30% experience back pain and arthritis, 21% have diabetes, and 16% suffer from respiratory diseases, including asthma. Cardiac physiotherapists assess multiple facets of a patient’s functioning, including strength, joint motion, respiratory capacity, and endurance, to develop an exercise routine that minimizes the risk of subsequent cardiac events.

Impact of Physiotherapy in Cardiac Rehabilitation

Physiotherapy-led cardiac rehabilitation (CR) programs have been shown to significantly reduce mortality rates, enhance overall health and quality of life, shorten hospital stays, and decrease hospital readmissions. In Ireland, cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death, accounting for 33% of fatalities, with heart disease—primarily heart attacks—being the most common contributor. Cardiac physiotherapy plays a vital role in helping patients achieve the necessary level of exercise to mitigate these risks.

Professional Recognition

Karen Cradock is a distinguished cardiac physiotherapist who has made notable contributions to cardiac rehabilitation. She was recognized as a specialist member of the Irish Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in 2015 for her efforts in this field and currently serves as the Therapy Lead for the National Heart Failure Clinical Programme.
