Study Identifies Sleep Profiles Linked to Health Traits
Importance of Quality Sleep
Getting sufficient high-quality sleep is crucial for overall health and wellbeing. However, determining whether the sleep one is getting meets individual needs can be challenging.
Research Overview
Recent research has unveiled five distinct sleep profiles that connect brain activity and sleep quality with various health and lifestyle outcomes. The study indicates that these sleep profiles are associated not only with health and behavior but also with the brain’s wiring and activity.
Impact of Sleep on Health
If you experience difficulties falling asleep or often wake up during the night, this may be linked to your brain’s configuration, potentially influencing both mental and physical health.
Study Details
Conducted by researchers from Canada and Singapore, this study utilized patient-reported sleep, health, and lifestyle factors alongside brain imaging to identify the five distinct sleep profiles. Published in PLOS Biology, the findings reveal that each profile exhibits unique patterns of brain network organization, correlating with various mental and physical health traits.
Key Findings
Valeria Kebets, PhD, co-first author of the study and manager of machine learning projects at the Applied AI Institute, Concordia University in Montreal, Canada, shared insights with Medical News Today. She stated, “The most important finding of our study is that sleep is multi-dimensional, and some of the profiles show that specific aspects of sleep are related to mental health or cognitive performance in a distinct way.”
