Exploring the Benefits of Jasmine Rice in Skincare
Introduction to Jasmine Rice in Skincare
If you are in search of a new, natural skincare product, consider one that incorporates jasmine rice. A study conducted in Thailand in 2015 indicates that creams containing ML, derived from jasmine rice, may significantly benefit the skin. These creams can aid in moisture retention, enhance firmness, improve smoothness, prevent wrinkles, and lighten dark spots.
Background of the Study
Before this study, there was limited scientific evidence supporting traditional Asian medicine claims regarding the efficacy of rice extracts in treating skin issues. Researchers sought to investigate these assertions further.
Extraction Process of ML
The study involved extracting panicles from jasmine rice, specifically the Khao Dawk Mali 105 variety. Panicles are small, irregular flower clusters that extend from the rice grain. Researchers selected jasmine rice due to its rich phenolic composition, which consists of natural substances with similar chemical structures.
After harvesting, the panicles were thoroughly cleaned, dried, and ground into a fine powder. This powder was then combined with various cosmetic-grade chemical compounds through three titration processes to create 0.1%, 0.2%, and 0.3% ML extracts.
Study Methodology
Published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology, this novel study involved healthy Thai participants aged 25 to 50. Candidates were screened to ensure they had no allergies, extreme skin sensitivities, and were not dieting, pregnant, or lactating.
In one phase of the study, 20 participants applied either a skin patch of 0.1% or 0.2% ML cream, water, or another water-soluble cream for 24 hours while reporting any skin irritation.
A double-blind placebo test lasting 84 days included 24 healthy females, divided into two groups of 12. One group applied the ML samples, while the other received placebos. Applications were made to the underside of their forearms twice daily, and all participants were instructed to refrain from using steroids, smoking, or consuming alcohol during the study.
Evaluation Process
Researchers assessed the treated areas at the beginning of the study and again at 14, 28, 56, and 84 days. Additionally, a questionnaire was distributed to 30 female volunteers aged 20 to 60 years to gather feedback on their preferences regarding the ML creams.
Results and Findings
The results demonstrated that the jasmine rice panicle cream—ML creams—led to noticeable improvements in skin firmness, hydration, smoothness, and lightening of dark spots. These effects were particularly pronounced by the 56th and 84th days of the study.
Survey responses indicated a preference for the 0.1% ML cream due to its favorable characteristics, including color, odor, viscosity, greasiness, spreadability, absorption, and moisturizing qualities.
Conclusion and Limitations
The findings of this research suggest a positive correlation between the beneficial properties of jasmine rice and dermatological improvements, supporting traditional Asian medicinal claims with modern scientific data. This study ranks among the few to explore this topic.
However, a limitation exists as the majority of participants were Thai females. Including male participants and individuals from different nationalities may yield varied results. Additionally, studying other rice varieties could provide a broader range of extracts suitable for cosmetic applications.
