Investigation into Allegations at KGMU

Active Inquiry by Special Task Force

Lucknow: Babita Singh Chauhan, Chairperson of the Uttar Pradesh State Women’s Commission, announced on Thursday that the Special Task Force (STF) is actively investigating the alleged forced religious conversion and sexual harassment case at King George’s Medical University (KGMU). This inquiry is being conducted under the direct supervision of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

Serious Nature of Allegations

Chauhan emphasized the gravity of the situation, indicating that the case involves serious accusations of love jihad and organized religious conversion. She noted that the evidence gathered thus far suggests the existence of a significant criminal network, rather than the actions of a solitary individual. In her statement to ANI, she confirmed that the investigation is ongoing and that there is no immediate need for a separate FIR concerning the recent sloganeering incident at the university. “This is a matter of investigation, and the investigation is already underway. The STF is looking into it. Once the probe is complete, the matter will resolve itself,” she stated, adding that the Chief Minister is regularly updated on the situation.

Role of Uttar Pradesh Women’s Commission

Chauhan also addressed the visit of Uttar Pradesh Women’s Commission Vice-Chairperson Aparna Bisht Yadav to KGMU, clarifying that her purpose was to gather information and that she did not play a direct role in the investigation. “She went there to collect information. When she did not get it, her supporters might have raised slogans, but I do not think there is any need for an FIR in this regard,” Chauhan explained.

Concerns Over Criminal Network

Highlighting the seriousness of the allegations against the accused, Chauhan remarked that various indicators imply a broader involvement beyond mere individual misconduct. “The situation cannot be taken lightly. It involves love jihad and religious conversion. He had connections that extended far and wide. There are many things which indicate that he was not a petty criminal. A gang appears to have been operating for a long time, in what manner and to what extent is now slowly coming out,” she asserted, noting that arrests have already been made as the investigation continues.

KGMU Administration’s Response

In related news, KGMU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Sonia Nityanand confirmed that the accused student has been found guilty according to the Vishakha Committee report and will not be permitted to continue his studies at the university. Speaking to ANI, she stated that the Chief Minister was briefed on the committee’s findings after the university sought time to present the report. “As per the Vishakha Committee report, the accused student has been found guilty, and the KGMU administration has decided that he cannot continue his course here,” she said.

Escalation of Controversy

The controversy intensified on January 9 when Aparna Bisht Yadav claimed that the KGMU administration hindered her visit and attempted to suppress complaints of sexual harassment made by women doctors. She asserted that her visit pertained not only to the case involving the accused but also to two other serious complaints previously brought to the commission’s attention.
