FDA to Host Inaugural Digital Health Advisory Committee Meeting

The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is set to conduct its first Digital Health Advisory Committee meeting on November 20th and 21st, 2024, in Gaithersburg, Maryland. This initial gathering will focus on the total product lifecycle considerations for generative AI-enabled medical devices.

Generative AI is increasingly recognized for its potential to assist medical professionals. Radiologists and ophthalmologists have been utilizing image recognition capabilities for several years to detect cancers and retinopathy.

Potential and Concerns

While some experts herald advances in generative AI as a transformative step in healthcare, concerns persist. Critics highlight issues regarding the reliability of generative AI, questioning how private companies will incorporate this technology into medical devices. Currently, tools like ChatGPT struggle with numerical operations and can produce erroneous outputs when unable to find expected information, a phenomenon known as “hallucination.”

The meeting will be open to the public, allowing attendees to contribute during the open section of the hearing. The deadline for submitting oral presentations for the public comment sessions is October 25th, 2024.

Schedule for Oral Presentations

Oral presentations will take place on November 20, 2024, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., and on November 21, 2024, from 9:15 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. These sessions will occur at the Holiday Inn Gaithersburg, located at Two Montgomery Village Ave., Gaithersburg, MD 20879. Additionally, the meetings will be accessible via webcast for those unable to attend in person.
